Faculty of English Language Studies (3)

The Faculty of the English Language Studies offers two major independent academic programmes (Foundation and BA (Hons) in English Language) and collaborates with the Faculty of the Business Studies and the Faculty of Information Technology to offer courses in their programmes.

The faculty is constantly engaged in research and scholarly activities. It strives to coordinate between students’ research, teachers’ research and the areas of study for the degree. It also researches on the growing needs of the society for trained.

The programmes offered in the faculty are current and innovative and designed to develop students’ cognitive and transferable skills besides subject knowledge. These programmes are:

Foundation Programme

Mission of the Foundation Programme

The mission of the Foundation Programme is to contribute actively to the achievement of the strategic objectives of the College by providing an educationally dynamic and supportive environment to enable students to attain the English language, IT, Maths and study skills required to successfully engage in undergraduate studies. In addition, we seek to instill in students a sense of co-operation, integrity, community responsibility and commitment to achieving their full potential.

 Programme overview

The Foundation programme is a two-semester preparatory programme of one-year duration. Students are required to pass semester one modules before proceeding onto semester two.

Programme Objectives:

The Foundation Programme is a bridging programme for the students with the General Diploma or equivalent to proceed to Diploma or Degree level study which is conducted in English Language. It equips students with the necessary study and academic skills required at the undergraduate level.

 Awards: (students must register for a particular award in order to qualify for that award)

  • Foundation Certificate
  • Mode of delivery: Full time and Part time

 Programme Structure

Students must satisfactorily complete 10 modules to be eligible for the award of the Foundation Certificate.

Programme overview

This degree in English Language focuses on developing highly employable bi-lingual individuals with marketable skills for potential employers. Apart from its vocational applications, it provides candidates with rigorous intellectual education, valuable in training them to analyze perceptively and critically, to reason effectively and express themselves clearly and rationally. Professions that require expertise in English Language include, but are not restricted to Translation, Journalism & the Media, Publishing, Human Resources and Public Relations.

Programme Objectives:

The general goals of the BA (Hons) in English Language have been to produce graduates with excellent communication skills in English language; and secondly, to ensure that those graduates are also able to describe, appreciate and analyze the language in the great variety of forms in which it occurs – spoken and written, formal and informal, in different contexts, genres and by different speakers. The first goal means improving proficiency to high levels; the second requires a thorough background in the subfields of theoretical linguistics.

  • Diploma in Higher Education
  • BA (Honours)

 Mode of delivery: Full time

 Programme Structure

Students who are registered for this programme, they are required to register on level 0 for 4 modules. This Level equips students with essential language skills for the challenges of level 1.  Like other programmes offered in the college, students are required to pass 8 modules totalling 120 credits in each year (level). In the final year students must also register for the project (dissertation) accounts for 30 credits (equivalent to a double module). In total students must satisfactorily complete 420 credits (28 modules) with a combination of core and specialisation modules to be eligible for the award of the BA (Hons).

Dr. Farhad Tayebipour is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of English Language at Majan University College. With over 14 years of teaching experience, Dr.Tayebipour joined Majan University College in September 2014. His areas of interest are second language acquisition, L2 pragmatics and L2 dynamic assessment.He teaches Second Language Acquisition, Semantics and Pragmatics, Academic Writing in English, and Academic Reading and Writing for Business.

Professor Ehsan Rassaei

Professor Ehsan Rassaei taught both undergraduate and postgraduate courses for more than 10 years before joining Majan in 2018 and has published a significant number of papers in top international journals such as System, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Language Teaching Research, and the Modern Language Journal. He was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor in October 2022. His areas of interest include corrective feedback in language classrooms, dynamic assessment, vocabulary teaching and computer-mediated language learning. He is particularly interested in investigating the application of different forms of technology to language teaching.

Dr.Laila AL-Balushi

Dr Laila Al Balushi is an educationist and researcher with an interest in technology and its impact on the future of education. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education, a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instructional Methods of Teaching the English Language, and an MSc in Educational Research. She recently received her PhD from Exeter University, UK. Dr Laila has in-depth experience and expertise in subjects like the role of language for teaching and learning, and curriculum and syllabus design in TESOL. Dr Laila wants to build a stronger community with quality education and structural training. She believes in the power of influence and engagement at all levels for success and diversity, capitalizing on strengths and building a better community with harmony and peace.

Abdelseid Hamid Sharafeldin

Abdelseid is a Senior Lecturer in English Language studies and he joined Majan College in October 2001. He has a B.A. in English Literature; a Masters in Communicative English; a Post Graduate diploma in the Teaching of English; a Diploma in Translation; a Certificate in American Culture and Civilization; and an M. Phil. in English Language Teaching. He is currently reading for his Ph.D.He has taught a variety of modules at all levels of the undergraduate programmes in Majan including English Language and Academic Skills, Intensive Academic Reading in English, General and Academic Writing in English, Personal and Professional Development.

Belema Edet

Belema Edet is a lecturer for the Foundation program, and holds an LLB in Law, and B.Ed in English Education. She teaches Academic Writing, Vocabulary in Communication, language and communication skills modules. Her areas of interest include EAP, ESP, teaching methods and motivation.

Majid Shatery

Majid has been teaching EFL on the Foundation programme at Majan University College since 2002. He currently co-manages the Foundation Programme. He holds an MA in English Language Teaching from Tehran University, Iran. His research interests include methods of English teaching and application of skills-based EFL materials.

 

George Puthery Louis

George P.Louis joined the faculty of English Language Studies at Majan College as a Lecturer in English in March 2014. He holds an MA in English Literature from Osmania University, India, a post graduate diploma in teaching English from CIEFL, India and CELTA. He was in the Ministry of Education, Oman for 15 years and in 2009 was honoured with the best teacher award. At Majan, he teaches Grammar in Context, Vocabulary in Communication and basic research skills. He believes that, "True teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create their own.”

Mohammed Tanveer

Mohammed Tanveer teaches a variety of English language modules including English Language Study and Academic Skills, Academic Writing, Academic Reading, Grammar in Context, Reading and Vocabulary Building in English, English for Professional Development and Communication in Business/IT, Integrated Language Skills for Business/IT, and Basic Research Skills. He has also been a Quality Assurance Co-ordinator of the English Foundation Programme. His teaching philosophy is a student-centered teaching approach that inspires learners and offers new learning experiences. He completed his Master of Education (M. Ed) in English Language Teaching from the University of Glasgow in 2007.

Muhammed Ibrahim Farooq

Muhammed Ibrahim Farooq is a Lecturer in English in the Faculty of English Language at Majan University College. He has been teaching English language for 16 years. Abdullah Saif Salimeen Al Badi joined Majan College (University College) in 2013 as an English language lecturer. He received an MA in Curriculum and Instruction in Teaching English from Muaata University, Jordan. At Majan College he teaches ELSAS, AR, VIC and BRS on the foundation Programme. He typically supervises graduation projects related to English and/or Arabic phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and discourse. As a teacher, Abdullah Al Badi is primarily interested in reading skills and teaching grammar in context.

Joined Majan college as a lecturer in Mathematics in September 2014. She finished both her Master Degree and Bachelor Degree in Mathematics. Also she holds B Ed in Mathematics. She worked as a Mathematics Lecturer for more than 4 years in India. Her research include Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Hajer AL-Majarafi

Ms. Hajer graduated from Majan College in January 2014, and in June 2014 she started working as an English Language teacher in the Faculty of English Language at Majan College (MCUC). She received her Bachelor degree in English Language, validated and awarded by the University of Bedfordshire, UK with an overall classification of 1st class borderline and she received certificates of Academic Excellence and Achievement. She is teaching different modules in the foundation programme. She is a TESOL member and presently pursuing her CELTA as she believe that every finish line is the beginning of a new race. She found Majan College an ideal place for studying with an encouraging environment for career growth.

Abdullah Al-Rajaibi

Mr. Abdullah Al-Rajaibi is a Teaching Assistant in the Foundation Programme, teaching English. He holds a Diploma in English (1994) and a Bachelor’s degree in TESOL (2003) from the University of Leeds. He worked as an English teacher in government schools for 18 years and was also an exam officer for four years in the Ministry of Education. Before joining Majan University College, he worked in other HEIs in the country in foundation programmes, teaching, co-ordinating and managing. He has attended various professional development workshops focused on learning outcomes, classroom management and developing a learner-centred approach.

Amani Al Abdulsalam

Amani Al Abdulsalam is a Teaching Assistant in English Language. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language Education from the University of Nizwa, and also holds a higher diploma in Teaching Arabic for non-Arabic speakers from the same university. She has taught in various different colleges and institutes within Oman. She is also interested in using modern methods of teaching, and investing more in the new generation of learners.

Sharifa AL Wahaibi

Ms. Sharifa AL Wahaibi graduated from Majan University College with 1 st class Honours in January 2019. Ms Sharifa attended and received her CELTA, which is a professional course required for language teachers, and joined Majan College’s General Foundation Programme as a teaching assistant in January 2021. She has started teaching GFP modules such as GC (Grammar in Context) in the Foundation Programme since January 2021. Her main interest is to create the best learning experience for Foundation students by applying an interactive approach to teaching.

Ibraheem ALMaaini

Ibraheem Al Maaini is a Teaching Assistant in the Foundation Programme, teaching English. He holds a Bachelor's degree in English language and Literature from Sultan Qaboos University. He received his CELTA in 2019, which is a qualification for teaching English as a second or foreign language. Ibraheem has worked in other colleges within Oman before joining Majan University College. As a teacher, he is mainly interested in speaking skills. He believes that creating a fun environment in the classroom is better for the learning process. Ibraheem is also responsible for the Progression Board (PB) and Academic Counselling (AC) students in the Foundation Programme.
