As part of its corporate social responsibility programme, Majan University College organized a youth development event entitled ‘MPOWR’ on 20th and 27th March 2019 at its Darsait campus. The college invited Indian Schools in Oman for its previous two MPOWR events in 2018, including those from Muscat (five schools), Salalah, Ibri, Nizwa, Sohar, Seeb, Mawaleh and Muladdah. This time around, the college invited Omani schools from the Muscat region, with an exclusive event for boys and girls separately. The objective of the event was to enable young people to discover their true potential, and to focus on leadership skills, problem solving, team building, and communication. In line with a ‘catch them young’ approach, Majan University College realises the importance of discovering leadership skills early in a person’s life and hence the target group were high school students (11th and 12th standard students). The session entitled ‘Unlock your Leadership Potential’ provided students with a deep awareness about their own leadership potential and style, while ‘High Impact Leaders’ enabled the students to learn about key competencies of highly effective leaders. In the session ‘Solving Problems through Creative Thinking’, students learned how to think outside the box when seeking solutions. ‘The Art and Science of Team Building’ showed students how to apply emotional intelligence when setting up and building teams. The training was conducted by Dr Tahseen Arshi, Director of Studies in the Faculty of Business Management, who engaged the students through activities and presentations. The new Google Chromelab at Majan College proved to be an excellent venue to enthuse the students with the use of technology and the latest Google apps, which they found to be interesting and innovative. The Dean of the College, Dr Maha Kobeil addressed the participants after the workshop and distributed gifts and certificates. The students’ feedback showed that they found the session valuable, and they also said that they hoped one day their schools would have similar labs and methods of teaching to the ones they encountered at Majan University College. The students showed enthusiasm after the event to discuss more about leadership with Dr Tahseen, and overall they displayed great satisfaction with the programme.
