About the Programme
The BSc (Hons) Data Science (Digital Archives) programme is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to handle and manage vast amounts of data from diverse sources.
With the exponential growth of data in today's digital world, data often comes in various formats, including structured, semi-structured, and unstructured, and from numerous sources such as social media, IoT devices, and traditional databases. This variability and volume present significant challenges in making the data usable for analysis. The programme emphasises the importance of pre-processing, which involves cleaning, transforming, and organising data to ensure its quality and consistency.
While the traditional view of an archive is static, in data science, especially within the scope of this programme, it takes on a dynamic role. Here, "digital archives" refers to the processes that ensure data is properly structured and accessible for analysis, which is a crucial step in the data lifecycle.
The curriculum also covers contemporary technologies and tools used in data management, including big data frameworks, cloud storage solutions, and database management systems. Students will gain hands-on experience in designing and implementing digital archives that can handle the demands of modern businesses, ensuring that data is readily accessible and actionable.
Additionally, the programme prepares graduates to understand and navigate the ethical and legal considerations in data management, especially in terms of data privacy and security. By the end of the programme, graduates will be well-equipped to take on roles as data scientists, data engineers, and digital archivists in various industries, contributing to the effective use of data as a strategic asset.
